Color Guard FAQ

What is color guard?

Color guard is a performance ensemble that combines elements of dance, theater, and equipment work (flags, rifles, and sabres) to bring music to life.

Do I need experience to join?

No, not at all! Most members start with zero experience. We teach everything from basic movement to equipment skills during rehearsals.

What kinds of skills are you looking for?

We’re looking for students who are willing to learn, positive, team-oriented, and open to trying something new! Dance, gymnastics, or performance experience can help but is not required.

What happens at an open rehearsal?

Open rehearsals are designed for you to try color guard out with no pressure. You’ll learn basic flag skills, basic dance technique, try simple choreography, meet current members and staff, and get a feel for rehearsals and our team’s culture! There is no commitment, just come and experience it!

What should I wear or bring?

Wear something you can move in comfortably!

  • Athletic clothes (t-shirt, leggings, shorts, etc.)
  • Sneakers
  • Hair pulled back (if applicable)

Bring water and a positive attitude!

When and where are rehearsals?

Our first open rehearsals will take place on May 4th and 6th from 6PM-8PM. We will start promptly at 6PM rehearsing in the main gymnasium at John F. Kennedy Memorial High School. More open rehearsals may be added on, stay tuned on Instagram by following @jfkmhsguard. If you can’t make an open rehearsal you can still join, just reach out!

Is color guard a sport or an art?

It’s both! Color guard is physically demanding like a sport, but also expressive like dance and theater.

What is the time commitment?

All performers are expected to attend every rehearsal and performance. Our calendar can be found here.

Do I have to audition?

No, we are happy to teach everyone who is willing to learn!

Will I make friends?

Yes, color guard is known for having a strong, supportive team culture. Many members say it’s where they found their closest friends!

Is there a cost to join?

There is no cost to join. There are some required purchases throughout the season for things like shirts, gloves, shoes, etc.

Why should I join color guard?

Trying something new is always intimidating but rewarding! You will learn new skills, have the opportunity to perform and express yourself, be part of a team, build confidence, have fun, and create lasting memories!
